Delta CRJ900 Overturns on Landing in Toronto
On February 17, 2025, Delta Connection Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, experienced a severe accident upon landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The Bombardier CRJ900LR aircraft, arriving from Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, flipped upside down on the runway during its landing, resulting in injuries to 21 of the 80 individuals on board. Remarkably, there were no fatalities.
Incident Details
The aircraft, tail number N932XJ, was attempting to land amid challenging weather conditions, including gusty crosswinds and blowing snow. Upon touchdown, the plane bounced, leading to a loss of control that caused it to overturn and come to rest inverted on the snow-covered runway. The impact resulted in the detachment of at least one wing and a brief fire near the fuselage.
Emergency Response and Injuries
Emergency responders promptly arrived at the scene, evacuating all passengers and crew. Eighteen individuals sustained injuries, with three reported in critical condition, including a child. The critically injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Despite the severity of the crash, the robust design of the aircraft and the effective response of the crew contributed to the high survival rate.
Investigation Underway
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has initiated an investigation into the incident, focusing on factors such as weather conditions, potential mechanical failures, and human error. Both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been recovered for analysis. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, along with other agencies, is assisting in the investigation.
Operational Impact
Following the accident, Toronto Pearson International Airport temporarily suspended all arrivals and departures to facilitate emergency response and investigation efforts.
