Air Greenland to Introduce Airbus A320neo in 2027
Air Greenland is set to enhance its fleet and expand its route network with the introduction of an Airbus A320neo, scheduled for delivery in December 2026 and expected to commence operations in the spring of 2027. This strategic move aligns with the anticipated opening of the newly expanded Ilulissat Airport, featuring a 2,200-meter runway capable of accommodating larger aircraft. The A320neo will primarily operate direct flights between Ilulissat and Copenhagen, complementing Air Greenland's existing Airbus A330-800neo, which serves the Nuuk-Copenhagen route.
The decision to lease the A320neo from Carlyle Aviation Partners for a six-year term, with an option to extend, was influenced by the current six to seven-year delivery timeline for new Airbus aircraft. This leasing arrangement allows Air Greenland to promptly capitalize on the new airport's capabilities and offers financial flexibility as the new route develops.
Maintenance for the A320neo will be based in Copenhagen, in partnership with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), which already services Air Greenland's A330-800neo. The commonality between the A320neo and A330-800neo enables pilots and cabin crew to operate both aircraft types under the same certification, streamlining operations and training processes. Additionally, several Dash-8 pilots will undergo retraining to qualify for A320neo operations.
